Kruger National Park

Choosing which time of year to see the Great Wildebeest Migration is made easy with this safari.

Experience a Kruger Park Safari of a Lifetime

It doesn't get much better than a Kruger Park safari. Home to the widest diversity of wildlife in South Africa and delivering some of the finest game viewing in the world, Kruger offers award-winning accommodation, smooth-running logistics and some of Africa's best trackers and guides, ready to take you on Big 5 game drives and thrilling walking safaris.

Among the World’s Very Best Big 5 Sightings

If ticking off seeing the Big 5 – leopard, lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo – is on your bucket list, then choose a Kruger safari. It’s not unusual to see all five in one day. As one of the oldest conservation areas in Africa, Kruger regularly delivers fantastic wildlife sightings with healthy populations of sought-after species like cheetah and wild dog plus excellent birding.

  • Up-close, reliable Big 5 sightings all year round
  • Tracker-and-guide teams work together to find sightings
  • No crowds at sightings (private reserves only)
  • Few fences so wildlife can roam freely

A Safari for Every Traveller

Kruger is ideal because of its excellent infrastructure, good travel network, professional guides and superb service. If you need creature comforts like Wi-Fi, air conditioning, exclusive-use vehicles or private plunge pools, then Kruger’s accommodation offers plenty to choose from. If you love being active on vacation, then Kruger’s lodges offer a wide variety of activities such as archery, wine tasting, star gazing, tennis, cooking lessons, yoga and specialist photography courses.

Great Destination for Celebrations

Just as Kruger is ideal for every type of traveller, it also lends itself to celebrations. Honeymooners will love the star beds and romantic sundowners while multi-generational families with children will feel safe and secure in fenced lodges with kids’ clubs. Whether it’s a marriage, an anniversary, a graduation or a family reunion, Kruger has enough accommodation and budget options to suit every occasion. Plus, there is much to do outside Kruger such as playing golf, going hot-air ballooning, visiting animal sanctuaries and hiking natural beauty spots.

  • Plan your dream honeymoon with private plunge pools, romantic dining and couple’s spa treatments.
  • Celebrate your children’s graduation at a family-friendly lodge.
  • Mark your loved-one’s birthday with special sundowners in the bush.
  • Experience a romantic Kruger safari for your anniversary.

Kruger Is Perfect for Walking and Guided Safaris

The Kruger offers top-notch classic safaris where expert guides and trackers go in search of the Big 5 in customised 4x4 vehicles. For the truly adventurous, lodges like Rhino Post in the national park, Africa on Foot in Klaserie and Ngala Safari Lodge in Timbavati offer walking safaris, where your game drives can be replaced by venturing out on your own steam with a guide to discover Kruger’s fascinating ecosystem.

  • Classic 4x4 safaris with tracker-and-guide teams.
  • Adventurous walking safaris allow you to discover the smaller fauna and flora.
  • Walk with an armed ranger through big game territory.
  • Birders will enjoy ticking off almost 520 recorded species on game drives or walks.

Convenient Travel Logistics & Easily Combined with Other Destinations

The Greater Kruger area is one of the most easily reachable wildlife areas in Africa. After jetting into the main hub of OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can either take a short-haul flight onto one of the three airports outside Kruger or be driven in air-conditioned comfort. Once you’re there, moving between lodges is by vehicle, which doubles as a game drive. The private reserves are compact and transfer times are comparatively short, meaning you spend more time on safari and less time travelling. The plethora of air connections allow you to easily merge your Kruger safari with other destinations.

  • Easily combined with island holidays: Mozambique and Mauritius
  • Easily accessible to: Cape Town and Victoria Falls
  • OR Tambo to Kruger about 450 kilometres / 280 miles by road (we will arrange a qualified driver-guide)

Best Time to Visit the Kruger National Park

Generally considered a year-round destination, the Kruger National Park has two distinct seasonsand choosing exactly when to go to the Kruger depends on what you want to experience.

Most visitors to the Kruger National Park come for the wildlife and there's no question that the dry winter season from May to October is considered the best time to go to Kruger for game viewing as well as walking safaris. Vegetation is low and sparse at this time of year, making animals easier to spot and follow, and permanent water sources provide rewarding game viewing.

Mid-winter - June to August - is a very comfortable time of year to visit the Kruger as there are few mosquitoes, little if any rain and temperatures are pleasantly warm during the day and refreshingly cool at night. The bone-dry, end-of-winter months of September and October often experience uncomfortably hot and humid conditions but concentrations of animals around water sources are at their highest - this period is often regarded as the best game-viewing time for a Kruger safari.

The summer rains arrive from November onwards, peak in January and February and end around April. The Kruger is transformed into a beautiful, thriving green landscape and it makes for superb photography. During the "Green Season", game viewing is still good - with many young summer-born animals around it's a predator's paradise - and it's the also best time to visit the Kruger for bird watching as well as safari-and-beach holiday combinations.

We would however recommend consulting a medical practitioner for advice about malaria if you plan to visit the Kruger during or just after summer. The risk of malaria is low but the region does lie within the malarial belt. And if you want to stay away from the crowds, we would further advise avoiding the southern/central Kruger during the long December/January school holidays - go to the far north of the park or the Kruger's private reserves or  concessions instead.

Where to Go in Kruger

A true heavyweight among Africa's parks and reserves and weighing in at a shade under 20 000 km², the Kruger National Park is roughly the size of Israel or Wales and spans two of South Africa's provinces. The park itself is however just one of the four elements that make up the Greater Kruger National Park, and travellers planning their Kruger safari should be familiar with the physical make-up of this extraordinary destination.

Panorama Route: stunning scenery & self-drive safaris

Panorama Route: stunning scenery & self-drive safaris

An extravagantly scenic region to the west of the Kruger National Park, the Panorama Route is rugged, mountainous country, scored with deep gorges and breathtaking views but is well served by easy roads and small, friendly towns. There are many places of interest throughout the Panorama Route - highlights include the Blyde River Canyon and Bourke's Luck Potholes, God's Window and the traditional village of Pilgrim's Rest.

It's where to go for a day or two of pure relaxation after all those crack-of-dawn starts in the Kruger and you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes down for somewhere to stay: accommodation on the Panorama Route ranges from world-class spas and luxurious retreats to family-friendly lodges and safari lodges. And if you do have energy left over from your safari, the Panorama Route is famous for its wealth of sporting and adventure activities - golf, cultural tours, horse-riding and quad biking are among the most popular.

Kruger National Park: South Africa's flagship reserve

South Africa's largest, most diverse and oldest conservation area is simply known as 'Kruger' and refers to the national park itself, managed by the government parastatal SANParks and open to the public.

Straddling both Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces, the Kruger National Park is fully fenced, has an extensive network of tarred and gravel roads and is home to a wide range of accommodation and visitor facilities, most of which are located in the south and central regions where game viewing is traditionally better.

Kruger's Private Reserves: Africa's best Big 5 game viewing

Running along much of the Kruger's western boundary are a number of privately owned and run game reserves, usually grouped in large blocks and then divided into individual reserves.

No longer fenced off from the park, these conservation-minded reserves include some of the best and biggest brand names in safari travel such as Sabi Sabi, Thornybush, Londolozi and Mala Mala, and they offer what many consider to be the ultimate African safari.

Not only is the accommodation, management and guiding astonishingly good, but your chances of seeing the Big 5 are virtually guaranteed. There are fewer restrictions than in the park so with off-road driving, guided nature walks and night drives permitted, you will get every opportunity to spot animals, which in any case tend to be more habituated to people, allowing for closer and more frequent sightings.

Top Travel Tips for the Kruger National Park

Keep it Safe: not only will you encounter large and potentially dangerous animals either when you are in a 4X4 vehicle or when on a walking safari, but accommodation in the Kruger National Park and its private reserves tends to be unfenced and it's not unusual for wild animals to wander through camp. Listen carefully to the safety briefings given by your ranger and lodge manager, and feel free to request an escort to and from your tent at night.

Mind the Mosquitoes: the Kruger National Park lies within the malaria belt but the chances of contracting the disease are low, even during the rainy summer months (December to April) when mosquito numbers are at their highest. Nevertheless, you're strongly advised to consult a medical practitioner before you visit the Kruger (especially if you are taking children) and to take necessary precautions to avoid being bitten while you're there.

Wrap Up in Winter: with early morning temperatures barely above freezing in June and July, it'll be colder than you think during Kruger's mid-winter season. Bring a warm top and hat for morning and evening game drives - many lodges will also supply blankets your personal use during these activities.

Avoid School Holidays: the main public-access park can get very busy during South Africa's long December and January summer holidays. We'd advise staying at one of Kruger's private reserves or concessions to ensure a private and more intimate safari experience.

Do a Self-drive Safari: a mix of easy accessibility, excellent infrastructure and do-it-yourself game viewing makes self-drive safaris to the Kruger National Park and Panorama Route both a simple and rewarding option. Choose your itinerary from our suggestions or tailor-make your own - either way it'll be a safari at your pace and set to your requirements.

Flights & Getting Around

Did you know you can book your flights through Africa Safari Booking? For more information and frequently asked questions, please see our Flights section.

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport: located in Nelspruit, Kruger's major airport is served by flights from JohannesburgCape Town and Durban while a flight from Vilanculos on the Mozambique coast means easy safari and beach holidays.

Hoedspruit Airport: fly into the Kruger's second airport from Johannesburg or Cape Town for easy access to the park's private reserves like the Sabi Sands, Timbavati and Thornybush.

Phalaborwa Airport: serving the wilder northern Kruger destinations, this small airport is accessed from Johannesburg only.

Private airstrips: it's also possible to take charter flights straight from Johannesburg to bush airstrips in the Sabi Sands and several of the Kruger's other private reserves.

Game drives and transfers to and from Kruger's airports and airstrips are conducted in open-sided 4X4s. Guided walking safaris - ranging from a few hours with your guide to multi-day camping hikes - are permitted in the private reserves and certain sections of the Kruger National Park.

Best Kruger Tours & Safaris

Apart from its breathtaking scenery and amazing wildlife, the beauty of the Kruger National Park is that it's so accessible. Just a few hours drive from Johannesburg and boasting its own international airport for easy connections to Cape Town and Mozambique's Indian Ocean coast, Kruger offers exceptional Big 5 game viewing and luxurious accommodation without being too far off the beaten track.

Moreover, a safari in the Kruger can be whatever you want it to be. Enjoy a romantic and decadent escape in one of Kruger's legendary private reserves while enjoying a Kruger National Park honeymoon or revel in the thrills of a guided walking safari and track big game on foot.

Our selection of Kruger Park tours and safaris also includes fly-in safaris for those who have less time to spare, affordable self-drive vacations for the independently-minded, and Kruger Park family holidays complete with tailored kids activities.
